What is the difference between a Michael Jackson impersonator and a tribute artist?

The difference lies in the intent of the performer.

Michael Jackson Impersonator

A Michael Jackson impersonator is a novelty act who imitates Michael Jackson’s appearance and persona, often for meet & greets, parodies, and brief appearances with a more up-close, informal tone. Impersonators aim to recreate the source material as literally as possible, and guests are generally encouraged to speak to them as if they are Michael Jackson himself.

Some impersonators are also performers and may dance or sing for short segments, but they are not typically trained or experienced in delivering setlists longer than 30 minutes on a consistent, full-time basis. Technical requirements are usually minimal and may be as simple as performing to music on a Bluetooth speaker.

While many impersonators are hobbyists without formal training, a select few operate at a high professional level and have even worked with Michael Jackson himself. However, the term “impersonator” is broad and does not imply production value, touring experience, or artistic interpretation.

Tribute Artist

A tribute artist is a professional entertainer who delivers a full-length, concert-style performance honoring the music and choreography of the artist, with a more serious and intentional production tone. Tribute artists may include original ideas or interpretations, offering a fresh and authentic perspective that excites most audiences, though dedicated purists may prefer a fully literal portrayal.

Tribute artists often have formal music, dance, or theatrical training, maintain regular rehearsal schedules, and operate with a professional staff. They typically require more advanced staging, lighting, and technical support. Tribute artists are rarer, costlier to book, and are generally full-time career performers.

Matt Walsh

Matt Walsh is a tribute artist. He performs Michael Jackson’s material as himself, not as Michael, through a serious, professionally produced show that honors, respects, and builds upon the legacy of the source material.
Matt has formal training in Dance and Theatre Arts and has performed professionally across the nation since age 14.
